A native of Rison, Arkansas, Ken earned his undergraduate degree in biology in 1983 from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. While there in 1981, he was introduced to flying at Grider Field. His aviation journey had begun. He attained his Commercial, Multi-engine, and Certified Flight Instructor (Instrument) along the way. In 1997, he obtained a master’s degree in public administration from Webster University. In 1993, he was appointed to the Arkansas Aeronautics Commission serving for twelve years including two as its Chairman. Currently, he is the chairman of the Pine Bluff Aviation (Airport) Commission. Twenty-seven years ago, Johnson was instrumental as a member of Black Pilots of America (BPA) to bring the organization’s annual “Operation Skyhook” to Pine Bluff. Owing to its overwhelming success, it’s been back every year since except for a two year hiatus due to the Covid epidemic. Pilots from all over the country converge on Pine Bluff for the event and meeting. Pilots average giving over 300 free airplane rides to the city’s youth introducing them to the joys and inspiration of flying. Ken, a Mooney aircraft owner, was inducted into the BPA Hall of Fame in 2022.
Ken is the General Manager of the Pine Bluff Wastewater Utility Department and is married to Mary Serita Johnson and they have two daughters, Lauren and Jordon and a grandson, Jaiden.
