Lt Gen (R) Glen W "Wally" Moorhead III
General Wally Moorhead was born February 18, 1946, in Smackover, Arkansas. A 1964 Smackover High School graduate, a 1965 USAF Academy (USAFA) Prep School graduate, a 1969 USAFA graduate, and two-year USAFA football letterman, he began his USAF career as a graduate assistant football coach in the USAFA Athletic Department. Wally then entered USAF Pilot Training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, and earned his USAF pilot wings as a Distinguished Graduate in April 1971. Wally then completed two combat tours in Southeast Asia, flying more than 350 close air support and air interdiction missions in the A-37 Dragonfly and A-7 Corsair, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, and 13 Air Medals.
General Moorhead retired from the USAF in 2006 after 38 years of active duty, which included multiple command and staff assignments, resulting in three DistinguishedService Medals and a Bronze Star. He commanded A-10 Thunderbolt and F-117Nighthawk Squadrons, an F-15E Strike Eagle Operations Group, the Warrior Prep Center in Germany, the 50th Space Wing and Space Warfare Center in Colorado Springs, CO, and the USAF Warfare Center at Nellis AFB, Nevada. His final command was the 16th AF and NATO Allied Air Command in Italy and Turkey. During those years, he also commanded the 16th Air Expeditionary Task Force in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom—100 aircraft and 5,000 personnel flying combat missions into Iraq.
Wally ended his USAF flying career with over 5,500 hours in the F-16, F-15E, F-117, A-10, A-7, A-37, T-38, T-37, and MU-2.
After retirement in 2006, General Moorhead continues to serve the USAF and DOD as a Mentor/Advisor and Senior Fellow, training and educating Joint, NATO, Allied, and Coalition Forces.
While General Moorhead has received several awards and recognitions for his career accomplishments, such as the Smackover Hall of Fame, USAFA Prep School Hall of Fame, and Air Force Association Senator Ted Stevens Leadership Award, Wally says his 2023 Air Force Association Lifetime Achievement Award—recognition by both the USAF as a "Pioneer of Red Flag" and simultaneously by the US Space Force (USSF)—stands out as a highlight. As testimony to his commanding and guiding influence for the men and women who were chosen to lead the new USSF, Senator Boozman inserted in the September 21, 2023, Congressional Record a tribute to General Moorhead, "...most consequential role...has been as key advisor in the development and stand-up of the Space Force. No one could overstate the value of his mentorship to the leaders of the Space Force..."
General Moorhead now resides in Colorado and Arizona.
